Sprocket & Reel offers a variety of structured workshops, presentations, and experiences for your community. These include shorter informational and interactive presentations on various topics realted to motion picture film, half-day cameraless filmmaking sessions, and comprehensive 2-day 16mm filmmaking workshops. However, we're happy to tailor and customize these sessions to fit your community's needs.
These experiences are for any institution, association, or special event with a community open to new and creative challenges, including film festivals, arts and culture festivals, archives, museums, galleries, corporate retreats, community and recreational centers, conferences, movie theaters, and university clubs or departments.
Informational Presentations offer an introductory and interactive overview on a variety of motion picture film topics. Presentations can be tailered to, for example, film identification, preservation techniques, or analog filmmaking strategies.
Presentations may be supplemented with physical film examples, potential 16mm screenings, or brief filmmaking tutorials. These presentation are typically scheduled for 1-2 hours, depending on the topic and level of interaction.
The Cameraless Filmmaking Workshop is an interactive and hands-on experience, offering participants all of the skills and equipment to scratch, paint, animate, and create their own 16mm film... without a camera.
Cameraless filmmaking techniques, sometimes called direct or scratch animation, offers an amazing introduction to both the physical characteristics and mechanics of motion picture film.
Carefully designed presentations that cover the physical characteristics of 16mm motion picture film and cameraless filmmaking techniques.
All of the essential filmmaking equipment, including black and transparent film leader, markers, paints, scratching utensils, and a film splicer and projector for viewing the film upon completion.

The 2-Day 16mm Filmmaking Workshop is our most comprehensive and immersive session, offering participants placed in small production groups, all of the skills, equipment, and instruction to shoot their own 16mm film over the course of 2 days.

All of the essential filmmaking equipment, including Bolex camera kits, analog light meters, tripods, and a variety of Kodak 16mm film stocks.
