Sprocket & Reel will be at the Indiana Youth Film Festival this year, held June 26-28, hosting a 2-hour workshop on 16mm filmmaking on Friday, June 26 at 10 East Arts HUB.
This hands-on 16mm workshop will introduce new and experienced filmmakers alike to the analog pleasures of working with 16mm motion picture film. A brief presentation will introduce participants to the foundational elements, equipment, and techniques for shooting on small gauge film.
This presentation will be followed by a cameraless filmmaking workshop, sometimes referred to as direct animation, where we will draw, paint, and manipulate a short 16mm film strip that will be projected with a beautiful 16mm Kodak Pageant projector. The workshop will conclude by loading and shooting one roll of 16mm film (or about 3 minutes) where participants can film quick "selfies" on a Bolex H16 using a self-timer accessory.
Canopy Bloomington, an Indiana based non-profit focused on urban forestry, published an interview between Caleb Allison and Jon Vickers, highlighting Allison's new 16mm camera-roll film, Sol Folium.
Shot entirely in-camera on a 100' roll of Kodak's 16mm Ektachrome, Sol Folium explores the impressionistic abilities of the Bolex H16 to translate and express the grace of the fall season into a dizzying mosaic of movement, emotion, color, and memory.
This segment marks the centennial celebration of 16mm film, a format that revolutionized visual storytelling. We take you inside a conference buzzing with filmmakers, professors, librarians, and archivists, each sharking their passions for this enduring format.
From academic discussions to hands-on workshops, we'll explore 16mm film's impact on cinema, education, and archival practices. Join us in honoring a century of innovation and the 16mm legacy that continues to unfold in frames and reels.
Produced by Saddam Abbas. Featuring Caleb Allison, Susanne Schwibs, and Rachael Stoeltje.
